True Peace Comes From The Prince Of Peace

We often think of peace as the absence of external conflict. But true peace is the absence of internal conflict. Scripture tells us in Isaiah 26:3, “You [God] will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” In Psalm 4:8, David writes, “I will both lie down in peace and sleep for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” And Jesus says in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” In closing his second letter to the Thessalonian church, Paul refers to Jesus as the “Lord of peace.” And this is consistent with Isaiah’s foretelling in Isaiah 9:6 of the birth of the Messiah: “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The world offers forgeries of peace. From deep breathing exercises and positive thinking to feng shui furniture design—you name it, it’s been tried. These may provide a temporary degree of external calmness, but they can never give us lasting unshakeable internal peace in the deepest recesses of our soul. This kind of peace—true peace—can come only through Jesus—the Author of Peace, the Prince of Peace, the One who IS our peace: Jehovah Shalom.

He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.
